Making The Most of Loyalty Cards

Which Loyalty Cards are there?

A wallet filled to the brim with loyalty cards isn’t quite as exciting as a wallet full of cash, but you really can make some serious savings every time you shop if you know how to make the most of these handy pieces of plastic.

As well as money back, there’s meal vouchers, discounts on flights, free coffees and online tokens for family days out and weekends away. Here’s our guide to being a savvy shopper by using your loyalty cards to the max.

Tesco Clubcard

This is perhaps the best-known loyalty card and a great way to save money when booking hotels or saving up vouchers for holiday discounts. The Clubcard gives customers one point per pound spent. These are earned in-store or via partners such as E.ON. Look to tripling or quadrupling your points through redeeming them with Boost Partners. Trade-in normal vouchers for Tesco’s special Clubcard Boost with tokens online, and each £10 voucher becomes worth up to £40 to exchange for meals, experiences and tickets.

Sainsbury’s Nectar

Another loyalty card that gives you a chance to save pounds when booking hotels, flights and hiring a car, Sainsbury’s Nectar card gives shoppers 50p for every £100 spent in-store or through one of its partners, such as eBay. Get 500 points and you’ll shave £2.50 off your shopping. Look out for quarterly double-ups on points to stretch things further.

Boots Advantage Card

This is the UK’s third most popular loyalty card. For every £1 that you spend at Bootsyou earn four points – equivalent to 4p. It’s worth putting off any big purchases until you see their triple points events when spending £30 or more in-store, gets you 12 points per pound rather than the usual four.

Morrison’s More Card

This is best used against fuel. Shoppers can collect points at all stores, its website or on fuel, where you get 10 points for every litre.

KFC and Costa

Now we know these aren’t supermarkets, but they’re some of our favourites – and who can resist their finger lickin’ good discounts? Join the Colonel’s Club at KFC and every time you spend £3 you’ll earn a stamp; seven stamps bags you a snack. The full 11 stamps will get you £5 off your KFC meal. While over at Costa you’ll earn 5 points for every £1 you spend and each point is then worth 1p. You’ll also gain an extra 100 points for registering your card online – almost the price of a teacake with jam!
